Nov. 26, 2006 - Columbus "Best Goat"

I wanted to say Columbus "greatest goat."  I was listening to CarTalk on the radio Saturday on my way to a showing and a man called in from Columbus Ohio.  He had a question about his car making a noise. Mostly though they talked about the Somali Restaurant that he owns / manages / works at....  He said they serve goat.

Muslim Restaurant Guide Zabihah.com - a guide to "Halal food" listed two Columbus Somali restaurants, African Paradise Restaurant  and Calanley.  They have lots of information about the restaurants and other ethic restaurants.

As an example:

"Cuisine: Somali
Price: $ out of $$$$
Halal menu:
Halal authentication: Unverified
Alcohol served? No
Payment accepted: UnknownCashVisaMasterCardBank debit card
Hours:
Unknown to unknown
Prayer area: Unknown
Child-friendly? Unknown
Restrooms: Unknown"

African Paradise had lots of reviews, Calanley had none.

From Zabihah:

African Paradise Restaurant  - 2263 Morse Road, Columbus, OH 43229-5820

Reviewer gave the restaurant 3 Stars -"Authentic Somalian food in a predominantly male Somalian neignborhood. Rice with chicken (boneless) was good. Comes with soup, salad, and some home made drink. Don't come for the ambiance though.

Reviewer gave the restuarant 4 stars -  "Yummyyyyyyyy! I love their Goat mean & Rise"

Calanley - Cleveland & Oakland Park Avenues, Columbus, OH 43224"

Zabihah.com  is a guide to Halal food outside countries where all food would be routinely Halal. I believe "Halal menu" means the meat was slaughtered and prepared in the manner prescribed by the Quaran or sharia.

I don't know if I could eat goat.

I heard that on Car Talk, too and I was yelling at the radio "Say the name of the restaurant!" but I don't think they did.  It sounded like the caller said they served African-Italian food.  Sounds interesting.

The Indian Oven serves curried goat; if you haven't had it before, that might be a good place to start.  It's a lot like lamb, only a little stringier.

I heard it as African-Italian too!  I was  pretty sure they did not say the name of the restaurant also. I love lamb but  I am not sure about eating goat.   Thanks for the comment and the recommendation of the Indian Oven.  Did you ever eat at Tandoori Palace on Campusview Drive? It was my favorite and I think it may have closed.  Such a tough spot for restaurants.

I had goat once at an Afghan restaurant in Canada. It was pretty good. I don't know about some of the Somali or Ethiopian restaurants here in Columbus. More than I'm comfortable with have been in the news for issues with the health dept. That's also why I avoid some of the smaller, non franchised Asian restaurants in town.

Thanks for the comment Paul.  I get very nervous about health department stuff...I probably don't pay enough attention to the news so I won't make myself sick thinking I could get sick. Maureen
